Emo was originally a term for music which translated to "emotional [hardcore]". First started by Rites of Spring, a DC Hardcore band and the translated out to numerous bands and a conversion to a specific style. The name has been hijacked by everything and really doesn't relate to it's roots anymore.
Emo style is indie-hipster clothing. Tight jeans. Dress shirt, tight sweater and converse sneakers is a good example of emo wear.
